The top 5 cocktails every party host must know

Craft cocktails have hit the big time – and that means there’s no shortage of quirky infusions in bars today. Exotic flavours, home-infused spirits, G&T meringues… clever, inventive recipes have become the norm.

But at the core of it all? The classics. This cocktail 101 gives the lowdown on five timeless recipes to learn before your party.

  1. The Martini

The quintessential cocktail with a thousand spin-offs. But this time, we’re sticking to the original. There are just two main ingredients but the big debate lies in the preparation. Vodka or gin? Shaken or stirred? Wet? Cold? Salt? Try it our way:

  • 60ml (2 parts) gin
  • 20ml (0.75 parts) dry vermouth
  • Lemon peel
  • Green olive

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Squeeze oil from the lemon peel onto the drink or garnish with an olive.

Serve in: One thing we can all agree on is how radiant your martini will look in the intricate crystal cuts of the Lismore Diamond martini glasses.

  1. The Daiquiri

The no-nonsense blend of white rum, sugar syrup and lime juice has been a favourite for more than 150 years. It’s the perfect summer sip, with a refreshing sour edge. Strawberry daiquiris may be popular, but you can’t beat the sharp simplicity of the original.

  • 60ml white rum
  • Juice lime juice
  • 10ml sugar syrup
  • Lime wedge

Shake all the ingredients with ice, before straining into a coupe. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Serve in: Lismore Essence champagne coupes for crystal that glitters but doesn’t obscure the colour of the contents. Appropriately elegant.

  1. The Negroni

Another very simple blend that can change immensely depending on brands used. With Florentine origins, the negroni is as romantic as cocktails come – and despite its bracing bitterness, it’s the perfect party refresher.

  • 45ml gin (read our guide to the new gin for more tips)
  • 40ml Campari
  • 30ml sweet vermouth
  • Orange peel

Place all three ingredients in a mixing glass, and crush them with a muddler. Use a cocktail strainer to pour the contents into a glass and then add ice cubes. To finish, mix with a cocktail spoon and garnish with an orange twist.

Serve in: The Lismore Diamond old-fashioned tumblers might be the classic ‘old-fashioned’ shape but they’re anything but. Give your negroni a modern slant with these glittering contemporary cuts.

  1. The Champagne Cocktail

Simple yet delectable, the classic champagne cocktail has been enjoyed for decades, doused with bitters and a sugar cube that furiously fizzes away in your glass. The original recipe first appeared in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 Bon Vivant’s Companion – and can still be found in countless bars in all corners of the globe.

  • 1 white sugar cube
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • Ice cold champagne
  • Lemon wedge

Placing the sugar cube onto a spoon, add the bitters. Drop the soaked sugar into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne and serve with a thin lemon twist.

Serve in: All that fizzing just isn’t sparkling enough – the Lismore Essence champagne flutes are simply destined for this cocktail.

  1. The Margarita

This tart, zingy party pleaser is one every home cocktail-maker should have in their repertoire. The origin of the margarita may be widely debated but there’s no complication when it comes to sipping this salt-rimmed classic.

  • 35ml tequila
  • 20ml cointreau
  • 35ml lime juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with lots of ice and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, then roll the rim in salt. Strain the drink into the glass, adding a lime wedge to garnish.

Serve in: A wedge of lime and that generous salt rim should be enough decoration for the margarita. Elegance champagne belle coupes offer the right level of flawless style.
